The main project objective is to share between project partners experience and methodologies for the assessment of tropical forest aboveground biomass. Two work packages will developed: the first will gather forest dendrometric data from different forest sites in South Asia in order to quantify and better understand the forest structural variations, such as stem height vs. diameter or stem diameter vs. crown size allometries, within and between sites. These local variations are currently considered as one of the main sources of uncertainty in regional forest biomass estimations. Three field sites are targeted in this WP, two in the Western Ghats of India, Uppanagla wet evergreen permanent sample plot and a network of 1-ha sample plots from dry deciduous to moist deciduous and wet evergreen forest around the town of Yellapur in Karnataka, and a 50-ha permanent plot at Khao Yai National Park in Thaïland. The three sites already benefited intensive field campaigns as well as very high resolution optical and/or Lidar remote sensing surveys. The second work package aims at developing a common methodological framework for large-scale extrapolations of forest biomass carbon stocks using remote sensing-based mapping technics. This methodological framework will benefit from expertise of each partner institutions that will be shared at the occasion of two workshops, one to be organized in Thailand, one in India.
