PA-RG202502- Vegetation changes around the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary: a case study in Co. Kerry, Ireland
Programme : The Palaeontological Association
Portée : Européenne
The fossil record shows that important vegetation changes happened around the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary (DCB), including the replacement of forests dominated by the progymnosperm tree Archaeopteris by more diverse forests dominated by seed plants. Current elements point towards an ecological re-organisation at the DCB but the scarcity of well dated and well-preserved macro-fossil assemblages prevents a good understanding of the event. In recent years, our team has started to re-investigate some of the classical plant-bearing localities of Ireland, one of the few regions in the world with both well-preserved plants macro-fossils and continuous geological sections recording continental ecosystems through the DCB. This project aims to characterize the different fossil plant assemblages and their depositional environments in a key locality of Co. Kerry, Ireland to (1) understand local changes in vegetation, and (2) replace them within the broader context of the DCB global events.
